Description

This cardamom coffee cake is a delightful treat with a warm, spiced flavor and a tender, moist crumb. Perfect for pairing with coffee or tea, its comforting aroma fills your kitchen.

Ingredients

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cardamom

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup sour cream

¼ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round or square cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cardamom, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon.
  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan, then sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the batter. Add the remaining batter and sprinkle the rest of the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top.
  8. Using a knife or toothpick, gently swirl the cinnamon-sugar into the batter for a marble effect.
  9. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

If you want extra crunch, add chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter.

For a sweet finish, drizzle a simple powdered sugar glaze over the cooled cake.

Experiment with adding berries or other fruits for a fruity variation.

Feel free to experiment with other spices like nutmeg or allspice to complement the cardamom flavor.
