Description

Crispy, golden baked onion ring chips made with sweet onions, panko breadcrumbs, and Parmesan cheese for a lighter twist on classic onion rings.

Ingredients

2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced into rings

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon milk

1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Cooking spray or olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lightly coat with cooking spray.
  2. Slice onions into thin rings and gently separate them.
  3. Prepare three bowls: place flour in the first; whisk eggs and milk in the second; mix panko, Parmesan, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in the third.
  4. Dip each onion ring into the flour and shake off excess.
  5. Dip into the egg mixture, coating completely.
  6. Press into the breadcrumb mixture, coating evenly on both sides.
  7. Arrange coated rings in a single layer on prepared baking sheets and lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
  8. Bake for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove from oven and cool slightly before serving with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the breadcrumb mixture.

Substitute red onions for a sharper flavor.

To make gluten-free, use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko.

Air-fry at 375°F for 10–15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat in the oven at 375°F for 5–8 minutes or in the air fryer to maintain crispiness.

Avoid microwaving to prevent sogginess.
