Description

A classic French Apple Custard Pie featuring tender cinnamon-spiced apples baked in a silky vanilla custard inside a flaky pie crust. Elegant yet comforting, this dessert is perfect for holidays, gatherings, or a refined everyday treat.

Ingredients

1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell (store-bought or homemade)

5 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

3 large eggs

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch of salt

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and place the unbaked pie shell on a baking sheet.
  2. Arrange the sliced apples evenly inside the pie shell, slightly overlapping them.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until smooth and slightly pale.
  4. Add the milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until fully combined.
  5. Carefully pour the custard mixture evenly over the apples.
  6. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  7. Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the edges are set and the center is slightly jiggly.
  8. Remove from the oven and cool completely on a wire rack to allow the custard to fully set.
  9. Dust lightly with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more complex flavor.

Add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of almond extract for extra warmth.

Sprinkle a tablespoon of brown sugar over apples for a caramelized touch.

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat gently at 300°F (150°C) for 10–15 minutes; avoid overheating in the microwave.

Best enjoyed fresh or within a few days; freezing is not recommended.
