Fried Apple or Peach Pies are a delicious, crispy treat filled with sweet, cinnamon-spiced fruit. This easy recipe uses dried or fresh fruit and refrigerated biscuit dough, making it perfect for a quick breakfast, dessert, or snack. Ingredients
8 ounces dried apples or dried peaches
1 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon butter
1 tsp cinnamon or apple pie spice
1 can jumbo refrigerated flaky biscuits
Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine the dried apples or peaches with water. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat, and simmer for about 30 minutes until the fruit becomes tender.
- Remove from heat, let cool, and mash the fruit slightly if the pieces are too large.
- Stir in the sugar and butter, then set the fruit mixture aside to cool completely.
- For a fresh fruit filling: In a sauté pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add 4 peeled, cored, and chopped apples, sugar, cinnamon, and 1 tsp lemon juice. Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes until the apples soften. Remove from heat, mash slightly, and cool.
- Roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle on a lightly floured surface.
- Place about 1 tablespoon of fruit mixture on one half of each biscuit circle. Moisten the edges with water and fold to seal.
- Use a fork dipped in flour to press the edges together.
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet to 370°F (or use a deep fryer). Fry the pies, turning once, until golden brown and fully cooked.
- Drain the fried pies on paper towels and allow them to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
You can use fresh fruit instead of dried, cooking the fruit as directed in the fresh fruit filling instructions.
For a sweeter filling, add more sugar or vanilla extract.
To store, place the pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes for a crispy texture.
