Ingredients
1 (12-pack) King's Hawaiian Rolls
3 large eggs
3/4 cup half-and-half or whole milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Pinch of salt
4 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
Powdered sugar, fresh fruit, and maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and half-and-half until fully combined.
- Add vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt. Whisk until everything is well incorporated.
- Poke several holes in the bottom of each Hawaiian roll using a toothpick or skewer to allow the custard to soak in.
- Dip the rolls into the custard mixture for 30 seconds per side, turning to coat all sides evenly. Avoid soaking too long to prevent sogginess.
- Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
- Place the soaked rolls on the skillet and cook for 30-60 seconds per side until golden brown. Flip with a spatula to ensure all sides are crispy.
- Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with fresh berries and maple syrup.
Notes
This dish is best served fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, warm in a skillet over low heat to maintain its crispy texture. Alternatively, reheat in the microwave (though the crispiness may be reduced).
For a dairy-free version, substitute the half-and-half with almond or coconut milk and use a plant-based butter substitute.
