Ingredients
1 and 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling water)
Coarse sea salt, for topping
1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir until the yeast dissolves, then let it sit for 5 minutes to become frothy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda to the water.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into an 18-inch rope and shape it into a pretzel or cut into bite-sized pieces.
- Carefully place the pretzels or pretzel bites into the boiling water for 30 seconds each, using a slotted spoon to remove them and place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Brush with more melted butter before serving.
