Description

Kreatopita is a traditional Greek meat pie made with flaky phyllo dough and a savory filling of spiced ground meat, herbs, and feta cheese. It's hearty, flavorful, and perfect for gatherings or special meals.

Ingredients

1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled

10 sheets phyllo dough, thawed

1/2 cup butter, melted (or olive oil for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and garlic until softened.
  3. Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Stir in the parsley, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  5. Mix in the beaten eggs and crumbled feta cheese into the cooled meat mixture.
  6. Layer 5 sheets of phyllo in the baking dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  7. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the phyllo base.
  8. Top with the remaining 5 sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  9. Brush the top with butter and cut shallow slits to mark serving portions.
  10. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the crust is golden and crisp.
  11. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

Thaw phyllo dough in the fridge overnight or at room temperature for a few hours before use.

Keep phyllo covered with a damp towel while working to prevent drying.

You can prepare the pie in advance and refrigerate before baking.

Freeze unbaked or baked portions for later use; bake directly from frozen if needed.

Try adding mushrooms, spinach, or kefalotyri cheese for variations.
