Description
Nun's Puffs are soft, sweet, and puffy pastry bites, golden brown on the outside and light and airy on the inside, coated with a delicate cinnamon-sugar mixture. They are quick and easy to make and pair perfectly with tea or coffee.
Ingredients
1 cup water
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 large eggs
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup sugar (for coating)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until the butter melts.
- Once the mixture is boiling, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour and cinnamon. Mix until smooth and combined.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to dry out the dough slightly.
- Remove the dough from the heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, stirring well after each addition. The dough will become smooth and glossy.
- Spoon or pipe 1-inch mounds of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the puffs are golden brown and puffed up.
- While the puffs are baking, combine powdered sugar and vanilla extract in a small bowl.
- Once the puffs are done baking, let them cool slightly, then dip each puff into the sugar mixture to coat lightly.
Notes
For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the sugar coating.
These puffs can also be filled with whipped cream or custard for a richer treat.
If storing leftovers, keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days.
To refresh leftovers, warm them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes.
