Description

A cozy and classic dessert made with tender spiced apples and a buttery oat topping. This Old Fashioned Apple Crisp is perfect for serving warm with vanilla ice cream, offering a sweet and spicy flavor that fills the kitchen with warmth and comfort.

Ingredients

6 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon flour. Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cubed butter and cut it into the mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbly and tender.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving. Best served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

This dessert can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or refrigerated for up to 1 week.

To reheat, warm it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes or until heated through. For an extra crispy topping, place it under the broiler for a minute or two.

Can be frozen unbaked for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, increasing the time by 10-15 minutes.

For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
