Ingredients
6 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
 - In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon flour. Spread the mixture evenly into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
 - In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cubed butter and cut it into the mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
 - Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
 - Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbly and tender.
 - Let cool slightly before serving. Best served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
 
Notes
This dessert can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or refrigerated for up to 1 week.
To reheat, warm it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes or until heated through. For an extra crispy topping, place it under the broiler for a minute or two.
Can be frozen unbaked for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, increasing the time by 10-15 minutes.
For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
