Description

Pepper Jack Cheese Stuffed Fried Okra is a crispy, cheesy, and spicy treat that combines the rich taste of okra with the fiery depth of pepper jack cheese. A perfect snack or appetizer for those who love a flavorful kick.

Ingredients

12-15 fresh okra pods, ends trimmed

1 cup pepper jack cheese, shredded

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 egg, beaten

1/2 cup buttermilk

Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the okra pods lengthwise and scoop out the seeds using a spoon. Stuff each okra pod with shredded pepper jack cheese.
  2. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and buttermilk.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Dip each stuffed okra pod into the egg mixture, then dredge it in the flour-cornmeal mixture, ensuring an even coating.
  6. Carefully place the coated okra in the hot oil and fry for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Once fried, remove the okra from the oil and let it drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For a crunchier coating, use panko breadcrumbs in addition to the flour and cornmeal mixture.

To make the recipe vegan, swap the egg and buttermilk for a non-dairy option like almond milk and a flax egg.

If using frozen okra, thaw and pat dry before stuffing and frying.

To store leftovers, refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 2 days, and reheat in the oven for optimal crispiness.
