Ingredients
2 pounds ground beef
3 ½ pounds chopped cabbage
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup uncooked white rice
1 teaspoon salt
2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
-
Add the chopped onions to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onions are soft.
-
Stir in the uncooked rice and salt, mixing everything together thoroughly.
-
In a large baking dish, layer half of the chopped cabbage on the bottom.
-
Spread half of the beef mixture over the cabbage, then layer the remaining cabbage and beef mixture.
-
Pour the tomato sauce and beef broth evenly over the layers, ensuring the casserole is well covered.
-
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 ½ to 2 hours, or until the rice is cooked through and the cabbage is tender.
-
Once done, remove the foil and let the casserole sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the tomato sauce.
Try using turkey or pork for a lighter version.
For a vegetarian option, swap the beef for lentils.
