A warm, spiced drink perfect for winter evenings, this Glühwein (Mulled Winter Punch) brings all the cozy, festive vibes of a German Christmas market straight into my kitchen. Instead of wine, this version uses dark grape juice, making it completely non-alcoholic and family-friendly. With its comforting blend of citrus, cinnamon, and cloves, it's one of my favorite ways to warm up during the holidays.

Glühwein (Mulled Winter Punch)

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

1 bottle dark grape juice (750 ml)

1 orange, sliced (plus more for garnish)

3 cinnamon sticks

5 whole cloves

2 star anise (optional)

3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)

¼ cup apple juice or pomegranate juice (optional, for extra depth)

Directions

I pour the grape juice into a medium saucepan and warm it gently over low heat, making sure it doesn’t boil.

I add in the sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise (if I’m using it).

I stir in the sugar and let the mixture heat on low for 20–30 minutes so the flavors can fully infuse.

During the last 5 minutes, I stir in the apple or pomegranate juice if I want to deepen the flavor.

Once it's ready, I strain out the spices and orange slices.

I serve it hot in mugs or heatproof glasses, garnishing with a slice of orange or a cinnamon stick for a festive touch.

Variations

There are so many ways I can switch this up:

I sometimes use cranberry juice instead of apple or pomegranate for a tangy twist.

If I want a more citrusy punch, I add lemon slices or a splash of lemon juice.

For a less sweet version, I reduce the sugar or use honey or maple syrup instead.

To make it spicier, I add a pinch of grated nutmeg or a small piece of fresh ginger.

Storage/Reheating

If I have leftovers, I let them cool completely and store them in the fridge in a sealed jar or bottle for up to 3 days. When I’m ready to enjoy it again, I reheat it gently on the stove over low heat—never letting it boil—to keep the flavor just right.

FAQs

What does Glühwein mean?

Glühwein is a traditional German mulled wine typically enjoyed during the winter holidays. This non-alcoholic version uses grape juice instead of wine but still keeps the same warm, spiced flavor.

Can I make this in a slow cooker?

Yes, I can make this recipe in a slow cooker on low heat for about 2–3 hours. It’s a great way to keep it warm during parties or gatherings.

Can I add alcohol if I want to?

Absolutely. While I love this non-alcoholic version, I can easily add a splash of red wine or brandy if I want to make it more traditional for adult guests.

What other fruits can I use?

I sometimes add apple slices, cranberries, or lemon rounds for more depth and a festive look. Dried fruits like raisins or dried orange peel also work great.

Is this drink vegan?

Yes, this recipe is naturally vegan as long as I use a plant-based sugar (some white sugars are processed with bone char, so I check labels if needed).

Conclusion

Glühwein (Mulled Winter Punch) is one of those simple joys that makes winter feel magical. It’s easy to make, smells incredible, and brings people together with every warm sip. Whether I’m hosting a holiday get-together or just winding down on a chilly evening, this festive drink never fails to make the moment feel special.
