Description

These soft and gooey homemade cinnamon rolls feature a rich cinnamon sugar filling and a decadent cream cheese glaze. Perfect for breakfast or a special occasion!

Ingredients

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

4 cups all-purpose flour, divided

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar, packed

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

1/2 cup cream cheese, softened

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons milk (or as needed)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the remaining sugar, melted butter, salt, and eggs. Add the yeast mixture and 3 cups of flour. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until the dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a kitchen towel. Let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 16x24 inches).
  7. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly on top.
  8. Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the dough into 12 even pieces.
  9. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spacing them slightly apart. Cover the dish with a kitchen towel and let the rolls rise for 30-45 minutes.
  10. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  11. While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by beating the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk together until smooth.
  12. Once the rolls are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top.

Notes

Feel free to add nuts like chopped pecans or walnuts to the cinnamon-sugar filling for extra texture.

If you're not a fan of cream cheese, you can make a glaze with powdered sugar and milk, or even a buttercream frosting.

Try substituting the cinnamon filling with fruit jam or preserves for a unique twist.
