Description
A rich and fluffy vanilla buttercream frosting made with butter, confectioners' sugar, cream, and vanilla. It comes together in just five minutes and is perfect for spreading, piping, and decorating.
Ingredients
1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 lb (454 g) confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon (15 mL) vanilla
3 tablespoons (45 mL) heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Place the room-temperature butter and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Whip for about 1 minute until smooth. A hand mixer may also be used.
- Sift the confectioners' sugar and add it to the butter in several batches, mixing on low speed after each addition until incorporated.
- Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed to ensure the butter and sugar combine evenly.
- Once all the confectioners' sugar is incorporated, add 1 tablespoon of heavy whipping cream while mixing on low speed.
- Add the vanilla and continue beating until the buttercream is smooth, light, and fluffy.
- Gradually add the remaining heavy whipping cream as needed until the frosting reaches the desired consistency.
Notes
For the smoothest buttercream, use properly softened room-temperature butter and sift the confectioners' sugar before mixing.
For a firmer piping consistency, use less heavy cream or add a little extra sifted confectioners' sugar.
For a softer spreading consistency, add heavy cream or milk about 1 teaspoon at a time.
For vanilla bean buttercream, substitute vanilla bean paste for some or all of the vanilla.
For chocolate buttercream, mix unsweetened cocoa powder into the finished frosting and add extra cream as needed.
For almond buttercream, replace part of the vanilla with almond extract, adding it gradually to taste.
For lemon buttercream, add finely grated lemon zest and a small amount of fresh lemon juice, reducing the cream as needed.
For colored buttercream, add gel food coloring after the frosting is fully mixed.
