Description

Creamy Chocolate Lovers Oatmeal is a rich, comforting breakfast made with rolled oats, chia seeds, cocoa powder, milk, and maple syrup. Ready in just 15 minutes, this delicious chocolate oatmeal is naturally sweetened, wonderfully creamy, and perfect for a satisfying morning meal.

Ingredients

1/2 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned preferred)

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup milk of choice (dairy milk, almond milk, or oat milk)

1/2 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Add the rolled oats, chia seeds, and unsweetened cocoa powder to a small saucepan. Stir well to distribute the dry ingredients evenly and prevent cocoa powder from clumping.
  2. Pour in the milk and add the pure maple syrup. Stir thoroughly until the ingredients are combined and the oats are fully submerged.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and warm the mixture, stirring occasionally, until it begins to bubble gently.
  4. Reduce the heat to low or medium-low and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the oats are tender and the oatmeal becomes thick and creamy.
  5. If the oatmeal becomes too thick, stir in an additional splash of milk until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and transfer the chocolate oatmeal to a serving bowl.
  7. Add your favorite toppings, such as sliced bananas, fresh berries, almond butter, chopped nuts, or dark chocolate chips. Serve immediately while warm and creamy.

Notes

Optional toppings: Fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, sliced bananas, shredded coconut, almond butter, peanut butter, chopped walnuts, pecans, dark chocolate chips, extra chia seeds, hemp seeds, or a drizzle of maple syrup.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Variation: Stir 1 tablespoon of creamy peanut butter into the oatmeal during the final minute of cooking for a rich, nutty flavor.

Chocolate Banana Variation: Mash half a ripe banana and add it with the milk for extra creaminess and natural sweetness. Reduce the maple syrup if desired.

Vegan Option: Use almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk to make the recipe completely plant-based.

Extra Chocolate Variation: Stir a few dark chocolate chips into the hot oatmeal just before serving for a more indulgent chocolate flavor.

Chocolate Berry Variation: Top with fresh raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries for a refreshing contrast to the rich cocoa flavor.

Protein-Rich Variation: Use dairy or soy milk and add a spoonful of Greek yogurt after cooking for additional protein.

Chocolate Coconut Variation: Prepare with coconut milk and finish with unsweetened shredded coconut.

Quick Oats Substitute: Quick oats can replace rolled oats, but reduce the cooking time because they soften faster.

Gluten-Free Option: Use certified gluten-free rolled oats and verify that the remaining packaged ingredients are gluten-free.

Milk Substitute: Replace milk with water for a lighter oatmeal, or use half milk and half water to retain some creaminess.

Thicker Oatmeal: Simmer for an additional 1 to 2 minutes or let the cooked oatmeal rest briefly so the chia seeds absorb more liquid.

Refrigeration: Cool promptly and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.

Freezing: Divide into individual freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to 2 to 3 months for the best quality.

Stovetop Reheating: Add a splash of milk and warm over low to medium heat, stirring frequently until heated throughout.

Microwave Reheating: Place in a microwave-safe bowl with a little milk and heat in short intervals, stirring between intervals until evenly hot.

Meal Prep Tip: Prepare the oatmeal ahead of time and refrigerate. Add fresh fruit, nuts, and other toppings just before serving.

Serving Tip: Double all ingredients to prepare two servings, using a slightly larger saucepan.
