Description

These easy oven-baked sweet potato fries are tender on the inside, lightly crispy around the edges, and seasoned with smoky paprika, garlic, onion, and a hint of cayenne. Ready in just 30 minutes, they're a delicious, healthy, oil-free side dish that's naturally vegan and gluten-free.

Ingredients

3 large sweet potatoes

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Prepare a non-stick baking sheet.
  2. Scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water. Peel them if desired, or leave the skins on for extra texture and fiber. Cut into evenly sized fries approximately 1/2 inch thick.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Stir until evenly mixed.
  4. Place the sweet potato fries in a large mixing bowl or resealable bag. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over them and toss thoroughly until evenly coated. If the spices do not stick well, lightly dampen the potatoes with a little water.
  5. Arrange the seasoned fries in a single layer on the non-stick baking sheet, leaving space between the pieces. Use two baking sheets if necessary to prevent overcrowding.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, turning halfway through for more even browning. Cook until the fries are tender inside and lightly browned around the edges. Add a few extra minutes if needed, depending on thickness.
  7. Remove from the oven and serve immediately while hot. Enjoy with ketchup, vegan garlic sauce, hummus, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For crispier fries, cut the sweet potatoes into uniform pieces, dry them thoroughly after washing, and arrange them in a single layer without overcrowding. Since this recipe contains no oil or starch coating, expect lightly crispy edges rather than a deep-fried crunch.

Peeling is optional. Leaving the skins on adds texture and fiber.

For extra-spicy fries, increase the cayenne pepper to 1/2 teaspoon and add a pinch of chili powder.

For garlic and herb fries, add dried oregano, thyme, or rosemary to the seasoning mixture.

For a sweet and smoky variation, add a pinch of cinnamon.

For lemon pepper fries, replace some smoked paprika with extra black pepper and finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

For a milder family-friendly version, omit the cayenne pepper.

Air fryer option: Cook at 380°F (193°C) for approximately 12–18 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Work in batches to prevent overcrowding.

Serving suggestions: Pair with veggie burgers, wraps, sandwiches, grilled vegetables, fresh salads, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Refrigeration: Allow leftover fries to cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.

Freezing: Freeze cooled fries in a single layer until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Store for up to 2–3 months for best quality.

Oven reheating: Reheat at 425°F (220°C) for approximately 5–10 minutes, or until heated through.

Air fryer reheating: Reheat at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 3–5 minutes, shaking halfway through.

Microwave reheating is possible, but the fries will become softer. The oven or air fryer provides better texture.
