Description

A healthier twist on classic mozzarella sticks—these are made with string cheese, coated in a flavorful whole wheat breadcrumb and Parmesan mix, then baked to crispy perfection for a satisfying snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

6 string cheese sticks

1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 egg

1 tablespoon olive oil

Marinara sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut each string cheese stick into thirds to create bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a shallow bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and oregano.
  4. In another bowl, whisk the egg until smooth.
  5. Dip each cheese piece into the egg, then roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  6. Place the coated cheese sticks on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Drizzle with olive oil to help them crisp up in the oven.
  8. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until golden and melty inside.
  9. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

Freeze breaded cheese sticks for 10–15 minutes before baking to prevent oozing.

Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch.

Swap oregano with Italian seasoning for a herby twist.

Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 7–8 minutes as an alternative cooking method.

Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or air fryer.

Use low-moisture part-skim mozzarella string cheese for best results.
