Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon thyme (optional)
1 cup frozen peas and carrots (optional)
2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare Mashed Potatoes: Place the quartered potatoes into a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until tender. Drain the water, return potatoes to the pot, add milk and butter. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper, and keep warm.
- Cook Ground Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat. Add diced onions and minced garlic, sauté until soft and translucent.
- Make Gravy: Sprinkle flour over beef mixture, stirring to combine. Cook for 2 minutes. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme (optional). Simmer for 5 minutes until gravy thickens. Add frozen peas and carrots (optional) and cook until heated through.
- Serve: Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates, top with beef and gravy mixture, and serve immediately while hot.
Notes
If you prefer, substitute ground beef with a plant-based ground beef alternative for a vegetarian version.
To make the dish even more nutritious, consider adding vegetables like corn, green beans, or mushrooms to the gravy.
For a spicy kick, add a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes to the gravy.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave.
To make extra creamy mashed potatoes, add more butter and milk or substitute cream for milk.
