Description

Hot Chocolate Puppy Chow is a rich, crunchy, no-bake chocolate snack made with Rice Chex cereal, melted bittersweet chocolate, creamy peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, and hot cocoa mix. Coated in powdered sugar and finished with mini marshmallows and Snow Caps candy, this festive treat is perfect for holiday parties, movie nights, and homemade gifts.

Ingredients

10 cups Rice Chex cereal

12 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips

½ cup unsalted butter

½ cup creamy peanut butter

7 ounces marshmallow fluff or marshmallow creme

1.5 ounces dry hot cocoa mix

4 cups powdered sugar

3.1 ounces Snow Caps candy

3 cups mini marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Place 10 cups of Rice Chex cereal into a very large mixing bowl, leaving enough room to gently mix without crushing the cereal.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the bittersweet chocolate chips, unsalted butter, and creamy peanut butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely melted, smooth, and glossy. Avoid overheating the chocolate.
  3. While the chocolate mixture is still warm, stir in the marshmallow fluff or marshmallow creme until well combined. Add the dry hot cocoa mix and stir until evenly incorporated.
  4. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex cereal. Using a large spatula, gently fold until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated, taking care not to crush them.
  5. Transfer the chocolate-coated cereal into a large resealable bag or container with a secure lid. Work in two batches if necessary. Add the powdered sugar, seal, and gently shake until the cereal is thoroughly coated.
  6. Spread the coated cereal in an even layer on a large sheet of parchment paper. Allow it to cool and set for approximately 15 minutes, or until the chocolate coating is firm enough to handle.
  7. Transfer the cooled puppy chow to a large serving bowl. Gently fold in the Snow Caps candy and mini marshmallows until evenly distributed.
  8. Serve immediately in individual bowls or a large serving dish. Alternatively, package in decorative treat bags or airtight containers for holiday gifts.

Notes

Timing: Preparation takes approximately 15 minutes, with 5 minutes of cooking time. Allow an additional 15 minutes for cooling and setting, bringing the practical total to approximately 35 minutes.

Chocolate substitution: Replace bittersweet chocolate chips with milk chocolate chips for a sweeter, creamier flavor.

Peppermint variation: Add crushed peppermint candies or candy canes after the coated cereal has cooled for a festive peppermint hot chocolate flavor.

White chocolate variation: Substitute white chocolate chips and white hot chocolate mix for a sweeter winter-inspired version.

Extra marshmallow variation: Add additional mini marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallow bits for more marshmallow flavor and texture.

Salted chocolate variation: Sprinkle a small amount of flaky sea salt over the chocolate-coated cereal before adding the powdered sugar.

Holiday variation: Mix in red and green candy-coated chocolates or festive sprinkles for Christmas parties.

Peanut-free variation: Replace creamy peanut butter with sunflower seed butter. Check all ingredient labels for peanut allergens and cross-contact warnings.

Prevent sticky puppy chow: Shake the cereal thoroughly with powdered sugar and allow it to cool completely. Add a little extra powdered sugar if the coating remains sticky.

Make ahead: Prepare the recipe 1 to 2 days before serving and store in an airtight container. For the freshest texture, add the mini marshmallows and Snow Caps candy shortly before serving.

Room temperature storage: Store completely cooled puppy chow in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 5 days. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat.

Refrigerator storage: Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Let individual portions sit briefly at room temperature before serving.

Freezer storage: Freeze the chocolate-coated cereal in a freezer-safe airtight container for up to 2 months. For best results, freeze before adding marshmallows and candy. Thaw the sealed container at room temperature and add fresh mix-ins before serving.

Reheating: Do not reheat. This snack is intended to be enjoyed cool and crunchy, and heating will melt the chocolate and powdered sugar coating.

Pet safety: Despite its name, puppy chow is intended for people only. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, so keep this snack away from pets.
