Ingredients
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons active dry yeast
3 tablespoons canola oil (or substitute 1/4 cup melted butter)
3 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, oil, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Whisk in the egg and salt.
- Gradually add flour, starting with 3 cups, and mix until a soft dough forms. Add more flour if needed.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a slightly flattened ball.
- Place the dough balls 3 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise for 15 minutes until nearly doubled.
- Bake for 8-12 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Storage/Reheating: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a damp paper towel in the microwave for 15-20 seconds or bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
Dough Rising Tip: Ensure the water is warm (around 100°F / 38°C) to activate the yeast properly.
