Description
This salted caramel frosting is a rich, buttery frosting that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savory, ideal for cupcakes, cakes, or cookies.
Ingredients
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1/4 cup milk
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt (or 1/8 teaspoon table salt)
Instructions
- In a heavy saucepan, combine the brown sugar, cubed butter, and milk.
- Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the brown sugar is completely dissolved.
- Increase the heat to medium and stop stirring.
- Allow the mixture to boil gently for 3–6 minutes, or until bubbles form in the center and the mixture takes on a rich amber hue.
- Remove the pan from the heat and pour the hot caramel into a small bowl.
- Let the mixture cool completely to room temperature.
- Once cooled, transfer the caramel mixture to a mixer.
- Gradually beat in the powdered sugar until the frosting is smooth, creamy, and reaches the desired consistency.
- Stir in the sea salt to taste.
- Spoon the frosting into decorating bags fitted with a Wilton 2D tip for beautiful piping.
Notes
To store, place the frosting in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to a week.
If the frosting becomes too firm after refrigerating, microwave it for a few seconds to soften it slightly.
If the frosting is too thick, add more milk, one tablespoon at a time.
If the frosting is too runny, add more powdered sugar to thicken it.
