Description

Vanilla Custard Cream Squares are a rich and creamy dessert featuring a buttery graham cracker crust and a silky vanilla custard filling. Topped with a light dusting of powdered sugar, these elegant yet easy-to-make squares are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

2 cups graham cracker crumbs

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 cups whole milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

4 large egg yolks

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust:

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • In a bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and granulated sugar.
    • Press mixture into a greased 9x9-inch baking pan.
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden. Let cool.
  2. Make the Custard:

    • In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk, heavy cream, and sugar.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks and flour until smooth.
    • Gradually add some of the hot milk mixture to the eggs while whisking to temper them.
    • Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan, whisking constantly.
    • Cook over medium heat, whisking until thickened and bubbling. Boil for 2 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  3. Assemble and Chill:

    • Let the custard cool slightly, then pour it over the cooled crust.
    • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours until fully set.
  4. Serve:

    • Before serving, dust with powdered sugar.
    • Slice into squares and enjoy!

Notes

For smooth custard, whisk constantly and temper the egg mixture properly.

For clean slices, use a sharp knife and wipe it between cuts.

Best served chilled, but can be left at room temperature for 15 minutes if desired.
