This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy recipe is the perfect comfort food that’s incredibly easy to prepare. Tender chicken slowly cooked in a creamy, flavorful gravy makes for a hearty meal you can set and forget in your slow cooker.

Crockpot Chicken and Gravy

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)

1 packet ranch dressing mix (optional but adds flavor!)

1 packet gravy mix (chicken or turkey flavor)

1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup

1/2 cup chicken broth or water

1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

Directions

Prepare the chicken by placing the breasts or thighs into the bottom of the crockpot. I prefer thawed chicken for even cooking, but frozen works in a pinch.

In a bowl, combine the ranch dressing mix, gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and chicken broth or water. Stir everything until smooth.

Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the chicken in the crockpot. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder if using.

Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours, until the chicken is tender and easy to shred.

Shred the chicken right in the crockpot using two forks, mixing it into the gravy so every bite is flavorful.

Serve the chicken and gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or alongside steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Servings and timing

This recipe serves 4 people.
Cooking time is 6 to 7 hours on low or 3 to 4 hours on high. Prep time is minimal, about 10 minutes.

Variations

Add mushrooms: I like to sauté sliced mushrooms first and add them into the crockpot for extra depth and richness.

Crispy texture: For a little more texture, sear the chicken breasts in a pan before slow cooking.

Herb twist: Fresh or dried thyme or rosemary stirred into the gravy mix can elevate the flavor.

Storage/Reheating

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm gently on the stove or microwave until heated through. If the gravy thickens too much, I add a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen it back up.

FAQs

Can I use chicken thighs instead of breasts?

Yes, chicken thighs work wonderfully in this recipe and tend to stay juicy and tender with slow cooking.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Absolutely! I freeze the chicken and gravy in portion-sized containers for up to 3 months. Just thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Is it okay to use frozen chicken in the crockpot?

You can, but I find thawed chicken cooks more evenly and safely in the crockpot.

What can I serve with Crockpot Chicken and Gravy?

Mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or steamed veggies all pair well with this dish.

Can I make this recipe dairy-free?

To make it dairy-free, substitute the cream of chicken soup with a dairy-free alternative and check the ranch and gravy mixes for dairy ingredients or use homemade versions.

Conclusion

This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy is one of my go-to comfort meals. It’s simple, flavorful, and perfect for busy days when I want a satisfying home-cooked dinner without spending hours in the kitchen. The creamy gravy and tender chicken make every bite comforting, and the versatility lets me tailor it to whatever side dishes I have on hand.
