Description
Brazilian Coconut Flan with Berry Sauce, also known as Manjar Branco, is a silky, chilled coconut dessert with a rich, creamy texture. A bright homemade berry sauce adds a sweet-tart finish that makes it perfect for holidays, gatherings, or make-ahead entertaining.
Ingredients
1 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
4 1/2 cups whole milk
2 cups mixed berries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Whisk the coconut milk and cornstarch together in a large saucepan until completely smooth.
- Add the sweetened condensed milk and whole milk, whisking until fully combined.
- Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly for 20 to 30 minutes, until the mixture thickens and begins pulling away from the bottom of the pan.
- Rinse a bundt pan or flan mold with cold water and shake out any excess.
- Pour the thickened mixture into the prepared mold and let it cool to room temperature.
- Refrigerate for 8 to 12 hours, or overnight, until completely set.
- To make the berry sauce, combine the mixed berries, sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries soften and the sauce thickens slightly.
- Cool the berry sauce completely, then refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Gently loosen the edges of the flan if needed and invert onto a serving platter.
- Spoon the chilled berry sauce over the flan or serve alongside each slice.
Notes
Frozen berries work just as well as fresh.
For a tropical variation, replace the berry sauce with mango or passion fruit sauce.
Sprinkle toasted shredded coconut over the finished dessert for extra flavor and texture.
Store the flan covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and keep the berry sauce in a separate airtight container.
Serve chilled. Freezing is not recommended as it may affect the texture.
