Description
This Grandma-Style Apple Pie is a classic homemade dessert filled with tender Granny Smith apples, wrapped in a flaky double crust, and topped with a rich buttery caramel-style sauce. The lattice crust bakes up golden while the sweet sauce seeps into every cozy slice.
Ingredients
8 small Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1 9-inch double pie crust
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish. Add the sliced apples and mound them slightly in the center.
- Cut the second pie crust into strips and arrange them over the apples in a lattice pattern.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and water. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then simmer for 3 minutes.
- Slowly pour the warm sauce evenly over the lattice crust and apples.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Allow the pie to cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
Add cinnamon or nutmeg to the apples for extra warm spice flavor.
Mix Granny Smith apples with Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious apples for a sweeter filling.
Top the filling with chopped pecans or walnuts before adding the lattice crust for extra crunch.
Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
Reheat slices in a 325°F oven for the flakiest crust.
