Description
These Mummy Cheese Sticks wrap gooey string cheese in flaky crescent dough for a quick and playful Halloween snack. Edible eyes give each golden, cheesy mummy a spooky finishing touch.
Ingredients
6 string cheese sticks
1 sheet crescent roll dough
1 egg, for egg wash (optional)
2 small edible candy eyes per mummy, or cream cheese and black sesame seeds
1 teaspoon flour, for dusting the work surface
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lightly dust a work surface with flour and unroll the crescent roll dough.
- Cut the dough into long, thin strips to create the mummy bandages.
- Wrap the dough strips around each string cheese stick, overlapping the strips and leaving a few small gaps. Leave a small open area near the top for the eyes.
- Arrange the wrapped cheese sticks on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
- If using the egg wash, beat the egg and lightly brush it over the crescent dough for a shinier, more golden finish.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crescent dough is puffed and golden brown.
- Let the cheese sticks cool for a few minutes. Attach edible candy eyes with a tiny dab of cream cheese, or make savory eyes with small dots of cream cheese topped with black sesame seeds.
- Serve warm while the pastry is flaky and the cheese is soft and gooey.
Notes
Keep the string cheese well chilled before wrapping to help reduce cheese leakage during baking.
Firm mozzarella sticks can be substituted for string cheese.
For pizza mummies, spread a very thin layer of pizza sauce over the dough before wrapping.
Small pieces of pepperoni can be wrapped around the cheese for a heartier variation.
Black olive pieces can be used instead of candy eyes or black sesame seeds.
Serve with marinara, pizza sauce, ranch dressing, or garlic dipping sauce.
Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat at about 350°F (175°C) in the oven or air fryer until warmed through and crisp.
The mummies can be assembled a few hours ahead, covered, refrigerated, and baked shortly before serving.
Puff pastry can be substituted for crescent roll dough, but the baking time may need to be adjusted.
