Cheesy Pizza Toastie Sandwich a crispy, cheesy delight that combines the comfort of a grilled sandwich with all the savory flavors of pizza. Perfect for a quick meal or snack, this Cheesy Pizza Toastie Sandwich is sure to satisfy your cravings for something warm, cheesy, and full of flavor!

Cheesy Pizza Toastie Sandwich

Ingredients

2 slices of bread

2 tablespoons butter, softened

½ cup pizza sauce

½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

2 slices pepperoni or other pizza toppings (optional)

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

Directions

I begin by heating a non-stick skillet over medium heat.

Then, I butter one side of each slice of bread.

On the unbuttered side of one slice of bread, I spread a generous layer of pizza sauce.

Next, I sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the pizza sauce and add my choice of toppings (pepperoni, if I’m feeling traditional, or any other toppings I love).

I sprinkle a little dried oregano, garlic powder, and grated Parmesan cheese on top for extra flavor.

I top it with the second slice of bread, making sure the buttered side is facing out.

Placing the sandwich in the skillet, I cook it for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and the cheese has melted perfectly.

Once it’s done, I remove it from the skillet, slice it up, and serve it hot.

Servings and Timing

Variations

If I feel like switching things up, there are tons of variations I can try:

Vegetarian Version: Skip the pepperoni and add other toppings like mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives.

Extra Cheese: Add a mix of different cheeses like cheddar or provolone for a richer, cheesier experience.

Spicy Version: Sprinkle some chili flakes or add jalapeños for an extra kick.

Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free bread to make it suitable for those avoiding gluten.

Storage/Reheating

I personally recommend eating the sandwich fresh to enjoy the crispy, melty goodness. But if I have leftovers, I can store the sandwich in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. When I’m ready to enjoy it again, I can reheat it in a skillet on low heat, flipping it until it's warmed through and slightly crispy on the outside.

FAQs

Can I make this sandwich in the oven instead of a skillet?

Yes! If I want to make multiple sandwiches at once or prefer the oven, I can preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the assembled sandwich on a baking sheet and bake it for about 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

What bread is best for this sandwich?

I love using hearty, thick slices of bread like sourdough or whole wheat for extra flavor and texture. But any bread I have on hand works fine!

Can I add other pizza toppings to this sandwich?

Absolutely! I love to add mushrooms, olives, onions, or bell peppers for a bit more variety. The possibilities are endless, and I can make it as simple or loaded as I like.

How do I make this sandwich healthier?

To make it a bit lighter, I could use whole wheat bread, lower-fat mozzarella, and skip the pepperoni. I could also load it up with veggies like spinach, mushrooms, and tomatoes.

Can I freeze this sandwich?

While it’s best fresh, I can freeze the sandwich before cooking it. I would wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and foil and store it in the freezer for up to 1 month. To cook, I’d thaw it in the fridge overnight and then follow the normal skillet directions.

Conclusion

The Cheesy Pizza Toastie Sandwich is a fun and easy way to enjoy pizza flavors in a whole new form. Whether I’m craving a quick snack or a satisfying meal, this sandwich hits the spot. With its crispy, golden exterior and gooey, cheesy interior, it’s sure to become one of my go-to comfort foods. Plus, it’s so easy to customize, I can make it exactly how I like it every time!
