I turn simple sweet onions into golden Crispy Onion Ring Chips that deliver all the crunch of classic onion rings in a lighter, baked version. These chips come out perfectly seasoned, beautifully crisp, and completely snack-worthy. I love serving them for parties, game nights, or whenever I want a homemade savory treat without deep frying.

Crispy Onion Ring Chips

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced into rings

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon milk

1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

cooking spray or olive oil spray

Directions

I preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. I lightly coat them with cooking spray.

I slice the onions into thin rings and gently separate them.

I prepare three bowls: I place flour in the first bowl. In the second bowl, I whisk together eggs and milk. In the third bowl, I mix panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

I dip each onion ring into the flour and shake off the excess.

I dip the floured ring into the egg mixture, making sure it’s fully coated.

I press the ring into the breadcrumb mixture, coating both sides evenly.

I arrange the coated rings in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets. I lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.

I bake for 18–22 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chips are golden brown and crispy.

I remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving with my favorite dipping sauce.

Variations

I sometimes swap sweet onions for red onions for a slightly sharper flavor. When I want extra heat, I add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the breadcrumb mixture. For an herby twist, I mix in dried Italian seasoning. If I want to make them gluten-free, I use gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko. I also love making these in the air fryer at 375°F for about 10–15 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispiness.

Storage/Reheating

I store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To keep them crispy, I reheat them in the oven at 375°F for about 5–8 minutes or in the air fryer for a few minutes until heated through. I avoid using the microwave because it softens the coating.

FAQs

How do I keep the onion ring chips crispy?

I make sure not to overcrowd the baking sheet and always bake them in a single layer. Flipping them halfway through also helps both sides crisp evenly.

Can I make these in the air fryer instead of the oven?

Yes, I air-fry them at 375°F for about 10–15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden and crisp.

What dipping sauces pair well with these chips?

I love serving them with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, honey mustard, or classic marinara sauce.

Can I prepare them ahead of time?

I can coat the onion rings a few hours ahead and keep them refrigerated on a tray. I bake them just before serving for the best texture.

Why are my onion ring chips not getting crispy?

I check that I sprayed them lightly with oil and baked them long enough. Thin slices and proper coating also make a big difference in achieving that crunch.

Conclusion

I find these crispy onion ring chips to be the perfect balance of crunchy, savory, and satisfying. They give me everything I love about traditional onion rings in a lighter, baked form. Whether I serve them for a gathering or just as a homemade snack, they always deliver big flavor with minimal effort.
