Garlic Chicken Lo Mein is the perfect weeknight dinner that’s both quick and flavorful. With tender chicken, colorful vegetables, and savory lo mein noodles, this stir-fry is coated in a delicious sauce that will leave everyone asking for more. It’s an easy recipe to whip up when you want a comforting meal with minimal effort.

Garlic Chicken Lo Mein

Ingredients

8 oz lo mein noodles

2 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 lb chicken breast, thinly sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, bell peppers, broccoli)

¼ cup soy sauce

2 tablespoon oyster sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

Salt and pepper, to taste

Green onions, sliced (for garnish)

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

Directions

I start by cooking the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. After they’re done, I drain them and set them aside.

In a large skillet or wok, I heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. I cook the chicken slices until they’re browned and fully cooked. Once done, I remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside.

Then, I add the remaining oil to the skillet and sauté the minced garlic for about 1 minute. After that, I add the mixed vegetables and stir-fry them until they’re tender-crisp.

In a bowl, I mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and sesame oil. I add the cooked chicken, noodles, and sauce to the skillet with the vegetables.

I toss everything together and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes, making sure everything is well coated. To finish, I season with salt and pepper and garnish with sliced green onions before serving.

Variations

Protein Swap: I can easily swap out the chicken for beef, shrimp, or even tofu for a different twist on this dish.

Vegetable Options: If I’m not a fan of certain vegetables, I can swap them for others like snow peas, zucchini, or mushrooms.

Spicy Kick: To add some heat, I like to include a dash of crushed red pepper flakes or a splash of sriracha in the sauce.

Storage/Reheating

If I have leftovers, I store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. When reheating, I simply place the leftovers in a skillet over medium heat and stir-fry until heated through. If it feels dry, I add a little splash of soy sauce or water to help loosen it up.

FAQs

How do I prevent the noodles from sticking together?

To prevent the noodles from sticking, I make sure to stir them occasionally while they cook. Once drained, I also drizzle a bit of sesame oil over them to keep them from sticking together.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Yes! I can prepare the chicken and vegetables ahead of time and store them separately in the fridge. Then, when I’m ready to eat, I just cook the noodles and toss everything together in the skillet.

What kind of noodles should I use for lo mein?

I prefer using traditional lo mein noodles, but I can also use other types of Chinese wheat noodles if needed. Just make sure to follow the cooking instructions on the package.

Can I use a different kind of sauce?

Definitely! If I don’t have all the ingredients for the sauce, I can substitute the oyster sauce with hoisin sauce or add a little extra soy sauce for flavor.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

This recipe is not gluten-free due to the soy sauce and hoisin sauce. However, I can use gluten-free versions of these sauces to make it gluten-free.

Conclusion

Garlic Chicken Lo Mein is a delicious and satisfying stir-fry that’s quick and easy to make. With tender chicken, fresh vegetables, and savory noodles in a flavorful sauce, this dish is perfect for busy nights when I want a tasty meal in a short amount of time. Whether I stick to the original recipe or add my own twists, I know it’s going to be a hit!
