Witch Hat Cookies

These Witch Hat Cookies are one of my favorite treats to make for Halloween because they turn a simple chocolate cookie into a playful, spooky dessert. I make each soft cocoa cookie with a chocolate kiss in the center, then finish it with colorful icing to create the look of a tiny witch hat. They are easy enough for a casual baking afternoon but festive enough for Halloween parties, dessert tables, and classroom celebrations.

Witch Hat Cookies

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

½ teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon salt

24 chocolate kiss candies, unwrapped

½ cup orange decorating icing

½ cup purple decorating icing

½ cup green decorating icing

1 tablespoon powdered sugar, optional for dusting

Directions

I start by preheating my oven to 350°F (175°C) and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, I cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

I add the egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing until everything is smooth and completely combined.

In a separate bowl, I whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mixing these ingredients separately helps distribute the cocoa and baking powder evenly throughout the cookies.

I gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing just until a soft chocolate dough forms. I avoid overmixing once the flour has been incorporated.

I roll the dough into approximately 1-inch balls and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some room between each cookie.

I bake the cookies for 8–10 minutes. I look for cookies that are set around the edges but still slightly soft in the middle.

As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, I gently press one unwrapped chocolate kiss into the center of each warm cookie.

I leave the cookies to cool completely. The chocolate kisses can soften from the heat of the cookies, so I avoid touching them until they have firmed up again.

Once everything is cool, I pipe orange, purple, or green decorating icing around the bottom of each chocolate kiss to create the witch hat band.

I finish the cookies with small dots, swirls, or other icing decorations. If I want an extra finishing touch, I lightly dust parts of the cookies with powdered sugar.

Servings and Timing

This recipe makes approximately 24 Witch Hat Cookies.

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cooking Time: 8–10 minutes

Total Time: approximately 35 minutes

Servings: 24 cookies

Calories: approximately 180 kcal per serving

I keep in mind that the total time can be slightly longer when I include the time needed for the cookies and chocolate kisses to cool completely before decorating.

Variations

Different Hat Colors:

I can easily change the icing colors to match my Halloween theme. Orange, purple, and green give the cookies a classic Halloween appearance, while black, red, or even bright neon colors can create a different look.

Sprinkle Witch Hats:

After piping the icing around the chocolate kiss, I sometimes add Halloween sprinkles before the icing sets. This gives the cookies extra color and texture.

Candy Buckles:

For a more detailed witch hat, I can place a tiny candy decoration or sprinkle on the icing band to resemble a buckle.

Extra Chocolate Cookies:

When I want an even richer chocolate flavor, I can mix mini chocolate chips into the cookie dough. I keep the amount moderate so the cookies remain easy to shape.

Different Chocolate Centers:

I can experiment with different chocolate kiss varieties to change the flavor of the hats. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or filled varieties can all give the cookies a slightly different finish.

Storage/Reheating

I store completely cooled Witch Hat Cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for about 3–5 days. I place parchment or wax paper between layers so the icing decorations and chocolate kisses stay neat.

If my kitchen is particularly warm, I can refrigerate the cookies to prevent the chocolate hats from becoming too soft. I let refrigerated cookies sit at room temperature briefly before serving for a softer texture.

For longer storage, I can freeze the baked cookies, although I prefer freezing them before adding the chocolate kisses and decorative icing when possible. I place them in a freezer-safe container and keep them frozen for up to about 2–3 months. I thaw them at room temperature before decorating.

I generally don't reheat decorated Witch Hat Cookies because the chocolate kisses and icing can melt. If I want a freshly baked texture, I simply let chilled cookies return to room temperature before eating them.

FAQs

Can I make Witch Hat Cookies ahead of time?

Yes. I can bake and decorate these cookies a day or two before I need them. Once the icing and chocolate have completely set, I store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.

Why did my chocolate kisses melt?

The cookies are very hot when I press the kisses into them, so the chocolate naturally softens. I leave the cookies untouched until they cool completely. If my kitchen is warm, I can place the cooled tray somewhere cooler to help the chocolate firm up.

Can I chill the cookie dough before baking?

Yes. If my dough feels particularly soft or sticky, I can refrigerate it for about 20–30 minutes. Chilling makes the dough easier to roll and can also help the cookies maintain their shape during baking.

How do I know when the chocolate cookies are finished baking?

I remove them when the edges look set but the centers remain slightly soft. I avoid waiting until the cookies become completely firm in the oven because they continue to set as they cool.

Can I freeze Witch Hat Cookies?

Yes. I can freeze the baked cookies in an airtight freezer-safe container for around 2–3 months. For the neatest appearance, I prefer freezing plain cookies and adding the chocolate kisses and decorative icing after thawing whenever possible.

Conclusion

Witch Hat Cookies are a simple way for me to turn classic chocolate cookies into a festive Halloween dessert. I love the combination of soft cocoa cookies, creamy chocolate kisses, and bright icing bands, and the decorating process leaves plenty of room for creativity.

Whether I make them for a Halloween party, a spooky dessert table, or an afternoon of seasonal baking, these little witch hats add a fun homemade touch. With straightforward ingredients and only a few decorating steps, they are a Halloween recipe I can easily make year after year.
