Air Fryer Cod

Air Fryer Cod is one of my favorite ways to turn simple cod fillets into a tender, flaky, and flavorful dinner without spending much time in the kitchen. I season the fish with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper, then cook it at high heat in the air fryer. A splash of fresh lemon juice adds brightness and keeps the flavors fresh and balanced.

I especially like this recipe for busy weeknights because I can have dinner ready in under 20 minutes. The cod develops a lightly seasoned exterior while remaining moist and delicate inside, and I only need a handful of everyday ingredients to make it.

Air Fryer Cod

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

4 (6-ounce) cod fillets

4 teaspoons olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

4 teaspoons lemon juice

Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Lemon wedges, for serving

I prefer cod fillets that are similar in thickness because they cook more evenly. If my fillets vary considerably in size, I check the thinner pieces first so they don't become dry while the thicker ones finish cooking.

Directions

I start by brushing each cod fillet evenly with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, making sure the surface is lightly coated.

In a small bowl, I combine the salt, garlic powder, paprika, and ground black pepper. I sprinkle this seasoning mixture evenly over all sides of the cod fillets.

I preheat my air fryer to 400°F (200°C).

Once the air fryer is hot, I arrange two cod fillets in the basket in a single layer. I make sure the pieces aren't overlapping so the hot air can circulate around them.

I air fry the cod for 5 minutes. Then I open the basket and drizzle 1 teaspoon of lemon juice over each fillet.

I continue cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes. I know the cod is ready when it flakes easily with a fork and the thickest part reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).

I remove the cooked fillets and repeat the process with the remaining two pieces of cod.

I finish the fish with chopped fresh parsley and serve it immediately with fresh lemon wedges on the side.

Servings and Timing

This recipe makes 4 servings, using one 6-ounce cod fillet per serving.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 8–10 minutes per batch

Total Time: approximately 18–20 minutes, plus additional time when cooking in multiple batches

Servings: 4

Calories: approximately 245 kcal per serving

The exact cooking time can vary depending on the thickness of my cod fillets and the air fryer I use. I rely on the texture and internal temperature rather than cooking time alone.

Variations

For a spicier version, I add a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes to the seasoning mixture. It gives the mild cod a little heat without overpowering its delicate flavor.

When I want a smoky flavor, I replace regular paprika with smoked paprika. I can also add a little onion powder or dried oregano for a more savory seasoning blend.

For an herb-forward version, I mix dried parsley, dill, thyme, or Italian seasoning into the spices. Fresh dill also makes an excellent garnish in place of parsley.

If I want a richer finish, I brush the cooked cod with a small amount of melted butter mixed with fresh lemon juice. For extra garlic flavor, I can stir a little minced garlic into the butter before spooning it over the fish.

Storage/Reheating

I store leftover air fryer cod in an airtight container in the refrigerator once it has cooled. For the best texture and flavor, I try to eat it within 3 days.

When reheating, I prefer using the air fryer because it helps warm the fish without making the exterior soggy. I place the cod in the air fryer at about 350°F (175°C) and heat it for a few minutes, checking frequently so it doesn't overcook.

I can also reheat cod gently in the microwave when I'm short on time. I use short intervals at reduced power because fish can become dry and rubbery when overheated.

FAQs

How do I know when air fryer cod is done?

I look for cod that has turned opaque and flakes easily when gently pressed with a fork. For food safety, I also check the thickest section with an instant-read thermometer and make sure it reaches 145°F (63°C).

Can I make this recipe with frozen cod?

I can use frozen cod, but I prefer thawing it completely and patting it dry before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps the olive oil and spices stick to the surface and gives me a better finished texture.

Do I need to flip cod in the air fryer?

I don't flip the cod in this recipe. The circulating hot air cooks the fillets efficiently, and leaving them undisturbed also reduces the chance of delicate pieces breaking apart.

Why did my air fryer cod turn out dry?

When my cod turns out dry, it has usually cooked for too long. Fillet thickness varies, so I start checking near the lower end of the recommended cooking time. Using an instant-read thermometer also helps me avoid overcooking the fish.

What can I serve with air fryer cod?

I like serving this cod with roasted potatoes, rice, steamed vegetables, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, or a fresh salad. When I want a lighter meal, I pair it with vegetables and extra lemon wedges. For something more filling, I add potatoes, pasta, or rice.

Conclusion

Air Fryer Cod is a simple seafood recipe I can rely on whenever I want a quick, flavorful dinner with minimal preparation. The combination of garlic, paprika, black pepper, olive oil, and fresh lemon complements the mild cod without covering up its natural flavor.

With tender flakes, a lightly seasoned exterior, and a cooking time of only a few minutes, this is an easy recipe for adding more seafood to my weeknight meals. I like serving it straight from the air fryer with parsley, plenty of fresh lemon, and a simple side dish for a complete dinner.
