A Cinnamon Roll in a Mug is one of my favorite quick treats when I want something warm, sweet, and comforting without spending a lot of time in the kitchen. This soft, fluffy cinnamon roll comes together in minutes and cooks right in the microwave, making it perfect for a single-serving dessert, cozy snack, or even a special breakfast.

Cinnamon Roll in a Mug

Ingredients

(Tip: You'll find the full list of ingredients and measurements in the recipe card below.)

For the dough:

1 ½ tablespoons salted butter, melted

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

3 tablespoons milk

½ teaspoon vanilla

For the cinnamon filling:

1 tablespoon butter

2 tablespoons brown sugar

½ teaspoon cinnamon

For the glaze:

⅓ cup confectioners' sugar

1 tablespoon milk or heavy cream

Directions

I start by mixing the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, milk, vanilla, and melted butter in a small bowl until a soft dough forms.

I transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface.

I gently flatten the dough into a rectangle using my hands.

In a separate bowl, I melt the butter and combine it with the brown sugar and cinnamon until smooth.

I spread the cinnamon mixture evenly across the dough.

I carefully roll the dough into a tight cinnamon roll shape.

I lightly grease a microwave-safe mug and place the rolled dough inside.

I microwave the cinnamon roll for about 90 seconds. If needed, I add extra 10-second intervals until the center is fully cooked.

While the roll is cooking, I whisk together the confectioners' sugar and milk until a smooth glaze forms.

I pour the glaze over the warm cinnamon roll and serve it immediately.

Variations

I enjoy changing up this mug cinnamon roll depending on what I have available:

Chocolate Chip Version: I sprinkle a few chocolate chips over the cinnamon filling before rolling.

Cream Cheese Glaze: I mix softened cream cheese into the glaze for a richer topping.

Maple Cinnamon Roll: I replace part of the milk glaze with maple syrup.

Nutty Roll: I add chopped pecans or walnuts to the filling for extra crunch.

Pumpkin Spice Twist: I add a pinch of pumpkin pie spice to the cinnamon mixture during the fall season.

Storage/Reheating

Since this recipe makes a single serving, I usually enjoy it immediately while it's warm and fresh.

Storage:

I store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Reheating:

I microwave the cinnamon roll for 10 to 15 seconds until warmed through.

If the glaze has absorbed into the roll, I sometimes drizzle on a little extra glaze before serving.

FAQs

Can I make this recipe without a microwave?

Yes. I can bake the cinnamon roll in a small oven-safe ramekin at 350°F (175°C) until cooked through, usually about 12–15 minutes.

Can I use unsalted butter instead of salted butter?

Absolutely. I simply use unsalted butter and add a tiny pinch of salt to the dough if I want the same flavor balance.

Why is my cinnamon roll dry?

I find that overcooking is usually the cause. Since microwave power varies, I check the roll frequently and only add extra cooking time when needed.

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes. I can prepare the dough and filling a few hours in advance, keep them refrigerated, and assemble the cinnamon roll when I'm ready to cook it.

Can I use a dairy-free milk alternative?

Yes. I have successfully made this recipe using almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk as substitutes for regular milk.

Conclusion

I love how this Cinnamon Roll in a Mug transforms a handful of everyday ingredients into a warm and satisfying treat in just minutes. The soft dough, sweet cinnamon filling, and simple glaze create all the comfort of a traditional cinnamon roll without the lengthy preparation. Whenever I want a quick homemade dessert or cozy snack, this easy single-serving recipe is one of my favorite choices.
